The URLs that are stored in a Google contact for e.g. Twitter and other platforms are read by CardBook with an additional \ before the colon in the scheme.

      Example:

      In Google: http://twitter.com/name

      In Thunderbird: http\://twitter.com/name

I’m on Linux with latest Thunderbird and CardBook.

I can confirm this (had mentioned it already on the Addon-site). However: the problem is clearly from google, the contacts arrive with the distorted URL format.

What I did: load the downloaded contacts file from gmail into a texteditor and do a search/replace for http\:// <->  http://

Then only import the contacts to CardBook and all is well.

I think it is too much to ask the developer to correct the mistakes of another provider … but then, probably many users are importing their contacts from google, so maybe it would be nice to check (and silently correct) those occurrences of http\://
